Pilates
Bodyworks offers Pilates sessions as Personal Training, Group Reformer, Mat Class and Foam Roller Classes.
Pilates can be simply divided into ‘Studio’ and ‘Mat’ exercises. The Studio work allows either help or extra resistance to the movement performed and hence a greater variety of movements than using gravity alone. Emphasis is placed on isolating and controlling specific muscles and muscle groups and incorporating new patterns of movement. The result is an increased mechanical efficiency of movement which translates as a greater sense of wellbeing and improved performance in physical activities.
As a complete program or used in conjunction with other training regimes Pilates has now become synonymous with the development of strong, sleek, slender, supple and strong flexible bodies.
Practice Pilates as a complete training system or a superb cross training tool for sports specific performance enhancement. It is also an excellent means of treatment for the rehabilitation of musculo-skeletal injuries, improving posture, flexibility and the prevention and treatment of back pain.

History
Pilates was initially developed by Joseph Pilates who originally called his system ‘Contrology’. Joseph began as an intern in a military hospital on the Isle of Man in England during the First World War where he helped with the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers by devising exercises for the patients using bed springs he attached to the beds. After the war Joseph went back to Germany where he developed the ‘Mat Exercises’ further and then moved to New York in the USA where he worked with the Martha Graham dance company and became well known for his ability to help injured dancers. During this time he developed particular pieces of apparatus of which many are used today in the Pilates Studio. Perhaps the best known are the Trapeze Table, Wunda Chair, Reformer, Ladder Barrel and Spine Corrector.
After Joseph died his work was carried on through his wife Clara and a small group of persons who coined the term Pilates in memory of their teacher and mentor. During the last 20 years or so Pilates exercises have been progressively incorporated by physiotherapists and kinesiologists into rehabilitation programs and sports performance.
